Smart Cookie: Sara Senn, Founder Of Mermaid Cove Organics

1) Could you tell us a little about yourself and what’s your business about?

Mermaid Cove Organics was born from my desire to create a skincare brand that is truly natural, eco-friendly, plant-based & focuses on simplicity. I believe you don’t need much for your skin to be happy. Less is so much more. We use only 100% pure botanicals & plant-based ingredients is not only better for your skin but also better for the planet.

Early in my journey towards natural skincare, which started when I was a teenager, I was using products that claimed to be “natural” but were far from that (unfortunately, greenwashing still is a thing today). I turned to small, niche brands for what I couldn’t find in the mainstream skincare industry and also started making my own. I became fascinated with plants and their ability to nourish and heal skin. So I immersed myself in studying cosmetic formulating and aromatherapy whilst continuing to work full-time in my day job.

My background isn’t in skincare – although I have always been interested in it. I actually spent years at university getting a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Business Administration. Then 5 years working in marketing, but I decided to leave that world behind to pursue my dream of building my own business.

2) Do you have a morning routine? If so, what is it you do to set yourself up for the day
ahead?

Yes, I do! I’m a plant-lover, so the first thing I do in the morning is check on all my plants (whilst brushing my teeth � ). My morning skincare routine is fairly simple: I only wash my face with water in the mornings (less is more). Then I take the time to massage my face oil into my skin. Massage helps increase blood flow to all our cells & helps the oils absorb, also it just feels so good & makes me feel calm.

I then take the time to have breakfast & at least two cups of green tea whilst reading. This slow start to my day really helps me feel grounded and sets the tone for the day and I truly look forward to the time I have to myself each morning.

3) Why did you choose to go sustainable and eco-friendly?

It just seems like the most ethical & sustainable choice to make: we don’t get a second planet & I like this one a lot. Creating a brand that helps give people a more sustainable choice to care for their skin is how I do my part in helping to preserve our ecosystems.

4) What was the hardest part of starting your own business?

Quieting the voice in my own head that worries what others will think (this is something I am always working on). I’m originally from Switzerland, which is actually quite a conservative country. There are strong ideas on what the “right” thing to do is. And starting a business is seen as too risky. But well, here I am.

I think as a small business owner you really need to have a very strong WHY that keeps you grounded and focused. At least this has helped me so much when doubt creeps in.

5) One book and/or documentary everyone should read/watch? Why?

I’ve recently re-read “The Art of Frugal Hedonism”. I love this book because it talks about the simple joys in life. It reminds us of the truly important things and that happiness cannot be found in consumerism – which I resonate with so much.

6) Best piece of advice you have ever received?

“There are very few things in life that are really important, and you need to figure out what those few things are for you”. I was told this by a lovely lady I knew when I was still at uni. Often we feel like there is so much we need to give our energy to.

The world can be a very loud place if we don’t actively seek calmness & connection ourselves. Figuring out what is most important to you & then prioritising that as much as you can really helps to live more in line with your values and create the life that YOU want.
