1)  Could you tell us a little about yourself and what’s your business about?

I have a love for nature. I enjoy being outdoors, going for walks and exploring the terrain and wildlife. Living close to the ocean gives me a sense of peace, happiness and belonging.

I was concerned about the chemicals used on not only my very sensitive skin, but also of my children’s, in the 80’s. My search for natural alternatives for our health and wellbeing led me to study Aromatherapy and Cosmetic Science and develop a high performance range of products containing natural non toxic ingredients, gentle on sensitive skin while producing amazing results.

2)      Do you have a morning routine? If so, what is it you do to set yourself up for the day ahead?

I start my morning routine with spending time on myself and preparing for a big work day ahead. Clearing my mind of any stress through affirmations and meditation helps me to deal better with anything that comes my way throughout the day. This is followed by my skin care ritual.

Cleansing my skin with a good face washer is always part of my morning skin care ritual and sometimes may consist of a face mask. A coffee and a good book to read and giving time to myself helps me feel more empowered before I start my busy work day.

3)      Why did you choose to go sustainable and eco-friendly?

Growing up in a good Italian family that wastes nothing and my love for nature and our oceans has made me environmentally aware. It upsets me to see our corals and sea life deteriorate and some of our animals becoming extinct. I will never forget when I was very little and going on a Manly ferry and was so upset by the petroleum oil slick and smell in Sydney harbour. Thank goodness it is so much cleaner these days but we have a long way to go yet.

We use compostable mailers to post out our products and reusable glass bottles and jars. We source ethical accredited ingredients that have no plastic beads and that are not tested on animals. Buying Australian made local and organic ingredients free of pesticides helps me feel secure in knowing that I can safely use the products I manufacture. I choose Fair Trade Shea Butter which has a direct impact on the women, families and communities in Northern Ghana as I love to support and empower women.

4)      What was the hardest part of starting your own business?

I grew up in the hospitality industry with our family business and then owned my own restaurant for 10+ years, so I’m no stranger to business or hard work. What was the hardest part this time round is not having the budget needed to market a high performing skin care brand that works in perfect harmony with our bodies and our environment. Back then, there weren’t many other companies leading change away from mainstream mass produced products out there and making a positive impact on society. I felt like my message was falling on deaf ears. Luckily, there is a growing trend now and I don’t feel alone on this journey.

5)     One book and/or documentary everyone should read/watch? Why?

Psycho Cybernetics, published in 1960 by a plastic surgeon, Maxwell Maltz has to be my favourite life changing book I read in the 80’s and is still relevant today. He combined his work as a surgeon with his study in human psychology. He found that plastic surgery didn’t always help his patients with their self esteem. He discovered that we all have a mental portrait of our self image. A mental distortion that can be overcome. Our minds are our most strongest and valuable assets. This book has given me strength, resilience and self confidence.

6)       Best piece of advice you have ever received?

My grandmother said: “You can do anything with Love” My mum added to that. When something doesn’t go my way “Just shoosh it away and leave it to God”.

I would like to finish with a quote written by my daughter:
“Caring for your skin is not only a beauty ritual- it can be, but when we look at the bigger picture it is an act of self love. It’s the small acts that count. Treating your skin with love is a small act of self-care that can lead to true transformation on the inside. That is what it’s all about- learning to transform into who you really are, your highest potential.”
