Smart Cookie: Mitch White, Founder Of Kind Earth Coffee

1)  Could you tell us a little about yourself and what’s your business about?

I’m a Librarian by trade. Married to Chanel. Partners in business and life. Love researching and puns. Began my coffee roasting about 10 years ago in a small frypan and wooden spoon over a portable camping stove. Just trying to save some money.

Kind Earth Coffee is about kindness. Kindness to people, the earth and the environment. We want to have a tiny footprint on our beautiful earth but offer convenience and make ethically conscious choices for our customers so that they don’t have to. They can purchase from us knowing they are contributing to a more sustainable world.

2)      Do you have a morning routine? If so, what is it you do to set yourself up for the day ahead?

Two double ristrettos – words and thoughts can then happen. I get excited going to bed knowing I will wake up to a delicious brew.

I like to remind myself what I have to be thankful for each day. And put conscious thought/action/prayer to those that are going through difficult times and how to help.

3)      Why did you choose to go sustainable and eco-friendly?

Always conscious about what we buy and are able to use so there is no waste. Seeing pointless plastic wrapped around things that don’t need it.

Didn’t necessarily aim to be perfect in making sustainable choices, but knew something was better than nothing in looking after our unique place in the universe.

Resources are finite. If we can reuse, recycle, before creating new that’s a good start. And if what we are consuming & it’s packaging can feed the earth again – without harm –  we’ll all live in a healthier world.

4)      What was the hardest part of starting your own business?

The in-between where you know you need to give up your employment to give it more time and attention.

In small business, one person has to be many persons with multiple skill sets. Knowing all your regulations, obligations and laws around your particular industry – let alone honing the skills of the job you enjoy.

5)     One book and/or documentary everyone should read/watch? Why?

This is like picking a favourite child.

The Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy – because 42 – the answer to the “ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.”

6)       Best piece of advice you have ever received?

Delegate. Accountants are great. Web designers are great. Graphic designers are the bomb. You can’t do everything well. You will burn out – and end up with no business. Experts in their fields will actually save you time and money in the long run (and do a better job) allowing you to function on the core workings of your business. And free up your time to be with the ones you love.
