Smart Cookie: Elly Both, Founder Of Bright Green - Ecobuy

1) Could you tell us a little about yourself and what’s your business about?

Sure! I’m an Aussie mum of two living in Singapore. I’m also a self-confessed green geek and leaf lover so I’m always trying new things to make my home greener. A lot of people want to live a greener life, but it can be overwhelming to know where to start, not to mention finding the time! So, I started Bright Green to share simple green changes that everyone can make to start living a more conscious and sustainable lifestyle today.

2) Why did you choose to go sustainable and eco-friendly?

It’s a real passion of mine. I went through the process of decluttering a couple of years ago, and this really changed my perspective on a lot of things – especially purchasing. I realised that we were decluttering a lot of items that we had hardly used. Aside from the obvious financial aspect, we were getting rid of things that were near-new! This created an immediate mindset shift for me. All this stuff we were buying was using precious resources and we weren’t using it at all! It really changed my perspective on whether and how and why I buy things, and since then we have really moved towards a minimalist lifestyle. I wouldn’t describe us as hardcore minimalists, but we have certainly come a long way! And we are not looking back 🙂

3) What kind of services do you offer?

A few different ones! Mainly, I want to inspire and educate people to make small changes to become greener – whether that’s at home, work or life in general. I also have an online store to make it easy for people to find all the sustainable and plastic-free items they need – things like bamboo toothbrushes, plastic-free toothpaste, dishwashing soap blocks (to replace dishwashing liquid), scrubbing brushes in silicon and bamboo, and beeswax wraps, to name a few! I believe that to live a greener lifestyle, you don’t need to sacrifice anything! So, the products are all lovely to use as well as doing your bit for the environment. I also work with businesses to help them adopt strategies for reducing their environmental

4) What does a day in life look like for you?

Gosh it’s different every day, but always fun! I’m up early with the kids, getting them organised for school. After school drop-off, I come home and prioritise my day – it might be sourcing new products for the store, doing some project management work for one of my corporate clients, or researching a particular subject for my blog.

5) What is the most difficult part of starting a new business?

The most challenging thing for me has been losing the collaborative aspect that I had in spades in the corporate world. Having said that, because community is so important to me, I have gone about creating my own! I’ve met so many inspiring, like-minded people through Instagram, which has been amazing!
The other challenge is carving out chunks of time to work on the business. I’m privileged in that I was able to quit my day job earlier in the year so can dedicate my time to the business, when I’m not with the kids. It’s definitely a juggle, but I’m happy to do it!

6) Do you have any favourite books, podcasts or movies that you’d like to

The movie 2040 was definitely a game changer for me. I think if everyone watched that film, it would really change the way we look at things and how much technology we already have that could improve the world. I’ve recently discovered The Sustainability Agenda podcast, which I’m getting a lot from. I also love the Green Dreamer and Conscious Chatter podcasts.
