1)  Could you tell us a little about yourself and what’s your business about?

My name is Carol and I am the founder of Soy Candle Bar. My small business started off as a hobby inspired by my great interest in candles. Alongside my full time job as a pharmacist, I spent many months experimenting with all sorts of waxes, wicks, fragrances etc until I mastered the perfect combination and that was when Soy Candle Bar was born! Since then, I have handcrafted a large variety of candles and plan to expand more in the upcoming years to share with you all.

2)      Do you have a morning routine? If so, what is it you do to set yourself up for the day ahead?

Yes, I believe a good morning routine sets you up for a productive and efficient day ahead. My morning routine consists of waking up with a cup of coffee, checking my diary and planning my work load for Soy Candle Bar and planning how to fulfil the work in a timely manner around my full-time job and lastly, educating myself through social media platforms for both business and personal growth (usually when I am getting ready or traveling for work!).

3)      Why did you choose to go sustainable and eco-friendly?

Coming from a health-orientated profession, I had always favoured the ‘healthier’ and ‘environmentally friendly’ side of things which is why I believed in using high quality products which do not cause harm to our health nor the environment around us. I have also always been a huge fan of nature (and may I add, I love travelling to see natural landscapes!) and it disheartens me to see how much of our environment has eroded due to toxic waste, pollution and human activities. If making small changes like being eco-friendly and going sustainable can slowly improve our environment, count me in!

4)      What was the hardest part of starting your own business?

The hardest part would have to be time-management! Balancing between a full-time job, a side hustle, time with family and friends and time for myself, it was definitely a challenge. Starting a small business during our global pandemic was no joke.

Local supplies were low on stock and made it hard to move the business forward, but patience is key and we got there eventually. All the hard work and long hours has motivated me to bring you all these wonderful products and for this small business to grow to where it is today.

5)     One book and/or documentary everyone should read/watch? Why?

“#Girlboss” by Sophia Amoruso. A perfect read for all entrepreneurs or anyone that needs a bit of motivation to kickstart their dream job! It’s inspiring to see an everyday young woman go from zero to hero. Like all other business owners out there, kickstarting your own business may seem so daunting and uncertain but after reading Sophia’s journey with her brand ‘Nasty Gal’, it is so inspiring to see how much hard work pays off and how anyone can upscale their business through education and learning from others. Definitely a must-read for all business entrepreneurs!

6)       Best piece of advice you have ever received?

‘Everything happens for a reason, for experience or a lesson. Nothing is ever wasted because the soul is always gaining insight.’ For many years, I have stuck by this quote and it is applicable to all aspects in life. Starting up a candle business requires so much experimenting and behind the scene work that most of us don’t talk about, and usually is more error than success to perfect our own perfect candle formula. There has never been a moment of wasted time or effort, but more so a learning curve to building up the brand to it’s best potential.
